Towards the end of July with transfer speculation at fever pitch following the World Cup, a faceless Twitter account with about forty thousand followers put out the word that Manchester City had bid €100million for Yan Diomande.
It wasn’t true, of course, or at least if the interest was there, it had already evaporated by the time the claim was made.
Fabrizio Romano, who has north of a hundred million followers across the various places you can be followed online, pushed back at his critics with a line about “the fake news yesterday on Man City bidding for Diomande.” Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, who had spent the previous day questioning whether Romano’s Diomande reporting stood up at all, took that personally, told him he had crossed a line, and criticized Romano’s Jürgen Klopp story as being “simply disrespectful to every journalist who actually does proper reporting.”
Two of the biggest names in the transfer trade, firing shots at each other in public, over a transfer that eventually did happen — Diomande signed for Real Madrid on the 6th of August — with the argument being about who got to say it first and in what format. Pletternberg’s frustration was that Romano was less an informed journalist, and more a gambler playing the odds on both the news about Klopp (he was obviously going to become Germany coach eventually) and Diomande (at this point, he was obviously going to join Madrid, after Liverpool and PSG had ended their interest).
That has become the summer transfer window in a nutshell.
The transfer window had long become a ecosystem of its own, but it sure felt like the Summer 2026 edition has reached some sort of zenith or critical mass, where transfers fees for average to decent players skyrocketed, moves happened for the sake of moves, money exchanged hands just because, and chattering behind it all was the now 24/7 transfer content churn that attracts clicks and views like flies to a freshly dropped steaming pile of shit.
For decades, the transfer of football players as long had its own silly vocabulary, carried by red top newspapers and gossip columns. But that has entered an entirely different stratosphere with the rise of Fabrizio Romano and his ilk. HERE WE GO! DONE DEAL SOON! are now common parlance, as football fans, both genuine and those hiding behind anonymous Twitter Bluecheck accounts, beg for the next big update.
Red siren emojis litter every post and the caps lock button gets ever more worn down as a single transfer becomes a week’s worth of content. Sliver of updates which offer almost update at all. Teams in conversation, or negotiations, or conversations about possible negotiations, which sometimes move onto VERY important negotiations.
Each of these is a post on social media, and each post is a small hit of transfer dopamine to the masses, and the trick of the format is that it can be extended indefinitely because the train never, ever stops. A completed transfer is just one piece of content. A transfer saga fuels an entire summer of the football social media economy like nothing else.
The In The Knows, the tiered ecosystem of anonymous accounts who pretend to have inside information — are the visible bottom of the pyramid. The most famous of these is IndyKaila, a once sort of parody account by, supposedly, some chap who worked at KFC, has over the years seemed to change hands, either towards actual reporters or, at the very least, someone who is able to game some sort of income from the notoriety.
Some have raised the obvious question about whether agents use the reach of the big transfer accounts to unsettle players and clubs alike, get the wider public’s attention and to try and move markets, which may sound cynical until you consider just how simple it is for an agent to have his player’s name floated to thousands of people at no cost, just the future promise of information.
Looking at Romano’s obsession with certain players over the years, there is almost certainly some backscratching with agents and entourages to force their self-interests into the public domain. You only have to look at his incessant updates on Mason Greenwood following his departure from Manchester Utd, for example, to spot a clear effort on his side to rouse interest from clubs around Europe, whilst also testing fan sentiment to the news that their club might be interested in a player with such a disgusting past.
Sky Sports News was once the arena for transfer speculation, a permanent fixture on televisions throughout the summers, while Deadline Day was its glorious yellow-tied apex.
It still does the yellow ticker updates and the odd reporter outside the training ground, hastily dodging purple dildos. But it now feels like a linear-era relic in all of this. Sky are often reacting to whatever Romano or David Ornstein are putting up on Twitter, on the back foot just like everybody else. Transfers, it seems, are now mostly played out in WhatsApp or Telegram groups, where agents and club representative try to apply pressure in their favours.
And underneath all of the deafening transfer noise, the numbers this summer were very real and truly extraordinary.
Premier League clubs spent £3.48bn this summer per Sky Sports’ last count, past a record of £3.19bn set last year, recouping £2.17bn in sales for a net outlay of £1.30bn.
Twenty players joined Premier League clubs for £50m or more.
Ligue 1 clubs, by contrast, spent £490.6m and sold £957.6m worth, banking almost half a billion in profit. The Championship turned a £172.1m profit, increasingly becoming a supplier to England’s top tier, mostly relegated and young British talents getting funneled back into the Premier League at sizeable cost.
The fees for players have become astronomical. Chelsea paid Aston Villa £117m for Morgan Rogers, a record for a British player. Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest £116m for Elliot Anderson. Chelsea sold Enzo Fernández to Manchester City for £125m on deadline day, equalling the British record set when Liverpool bought Alexander Isak last year. Then Liverpool, after a long, drawn out saga, eventually paid PSG £123m for Bradley Barcola.
And Tottenham paid Manchester City £85m for Savinho, who scored all of two Premier League goals in two seasons at the club.
The Savinho deal deserves its own case study in transfer madness. City Football Group’s Troyes bought him from Atlético Mineiro in 2022 and never played him. He was loaned to PSV, then to Girona, another CFG club, where he started to turn heads. Manchester City then bought him from Troyes in 2024 for an initial £21m. Two years and two goals later, they sold him to Spurs for £75m plus £10m in add-ons. There’s nothing inherently illegal here, but it’s the sort of creative accounting with football’s rulebook that has allowed value to be manufactured with very little on-field evidence to back it up.
Which brings us onto the rules themselves. The derisory Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are gone, replaced by the Squad Cost Ratio, voted through by fourteen clubs in November 2025.
Everything you spend on the footballing squad — first-team wages, the manager’s salary, agents’ fees, and the amortised cost of your transfers — has to fall under 85% of your overall football revenue.
Then if you’re in Europe, UEFA’s version of the same rule caps you at 70%, while transfer fee amortisation is capped at five years, so the old Chelsea trick of firing out eight-year contracts to smear the fee across a decade is dead. And crucially, profit on player sales no longer lands in one lump; it gets spread across three years.
Under PSR rules, a June fire sale could rescue a club’s year — hence why we saw so many left-field transfers between the likes of Villa, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea.
Under SCR, revenue is the ceiling, and revenue is broadcast money, matchday, commercial and the academy. The likes of Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth and Palace all opposed the change, but the clubs that flourish under this system are the ones with enormous commercial departments and big academies.
That’s why the English premium has become so potent. It’s why Anderson is worth £116m, having already been a PSR cog between Newcastle and Forest, and why every homegrown player in Britain is an instrument in compliance.
Aston Villa have become one of the biggest flag bearers in all of this. UEFA fined them €22.5m in June for breaching the 70% squad cost limit, their second such fine in two years. Villa responded by selling Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins, taking apart the spine of the side that won the Europa League.
They’ve already had to get crafty with PSR in the past and because they maintain European qualification, now have to appease the stricter limitations of UEFA’s rules, putting them in a bind to have to sell and enter into some baffling transfer moves, including the recent £65m signing of Nicolas Jackson, another player who is decent but hardly justified such an outlay.
Meanwhile, Premier League clubs posted aggregate pre-tax losses of £948m in 2024/25, up around 600% on the previous year, and the domestic TV deal running to 2029 is worth £6.7bn with another £2.1bn a year coming in from abroad.
Across the league, money is more or less being set ablaze. A strong theme of this summer’s window has been the transfer of Premier League players to other Premier League clubs - Iliman Ndiaye was coveted by several, and ended up at City. Omar Marmoush and Sandro Tonali follow Savinho to Spurs. Bruno Guimarães swaps Newcastle for Arsenal, while Konsa moved there from Villa.
And the long-forgotten Mykhailo Mudryk, an £89m player three years ago, went to Tottenham on loan.
Ironically, the frontrunner for signing of the summer after two weeks is Mamadou Sangaré, who moved to Brentford from Lens for a measly €48m.
And even more ironically, with such a vast amount of spending and volume of transfers, its hard to pinpoint a team who have actually gotten better.
Chelsea spent a fortune but were left in the lurch following Enzo’s departure. Despite knowing for weeks that he wanted to leave and City were circling, they were left with their hands empty on deadline night when Monaco pulled the plug on a deal for Lamine Camara.
Liverpool have spent crazy month in back-to-back windows, but have several gaps and a threadbare squad. Arsenal are still light in attack. Spurs have signed a batch of players but none, at least individually, might move the needle enough. And it remains to be seen if City, who added over £300m worth of midfield talent, have suitably replaced Rodri, while if Erling Haaland goes down then their next striker off the rank is Ryan McAidoo.
So, HERE WE GO. The transfer bubble has become wildly unstable and the social media ecosystem around it has become utterly unbearable. There are warnings abound that clubs are operating too unsustainably, financing transfers with debt, seeing the 85% cap as a target they must hit, and the influx of international ownership and vulture fund riches as a chance to just spend for the sake of it, because the only thing worse than losing is being inactive in the marketplace.
I laughed at the visual of flies to a freshly dropped steaming pile of shit, because that really is what the Twitter transfer window has become!
